NEW Call of Duty game from Infinity Ward will include space combat and "full on Sci-Fi" according to reports discussing the PS4, Xbox One & PC title
The next Call of Duty game will be set in space.
That's the bold claim coming from several trusted websites this morning, originating from a comment made by serial industry insider Shinobi, made on the gaming forum Neogaf.
According to the trusted source, 2016's next Call of Duty game plans to ditch the tech heavy approach of the last two games in franchise in favour of a more far flung future focussing on space combat between warring sci-fi groups.
The masterminds behind all of this are long time CoD developer Infinity Ward, who to date have had a hand in making Call of Duty 2, Modern Warfare 1, 2 and 3 as well as Call of Duty: Ghosts.
At first it was believed that Infinity Ward were working on a follow up to Ghosts, but now many believe it will instead be entirely in the full on sci-fi camp.
And it's possible they've been teasing this for some time.
At the start of the year Infinity Ward teased fans with what they had planned at the start of the year, sending out a postcard celebrating an "incredible" 2016, using the space scene from Ghosts as the backdrop (see below).
In addition, the Call of Duty developers have spoken in the past about the game heading into space, with former Infinity Ward producer Mark Rubin commenting in 2013: "Yeah. It makes sense. I wouldn't count it out.
"Everything's on the table. When we start a new game every possibilities on the table. If we think that it'd be cool to have a battle over Jupiter, sure. Why not?
Fans might still want to temper their excitement though as none of this has been confirmed by Activision just yet, who when asked for comment from Eurogamer declined to comment.
Still we could find out pretty soon, as last years Black Ops 3 was officially revealed in April.
And assuming the game follows the series usual release pattern we'd expect to see the next Call of Duty to launch this November for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
Although unlike last year, it might have a lot more competition than last year as many suspect that one of Battlefield 5 or Titanfall 2 could launch late this year as well.
