SONY PlayStation 4 owners can already start to look forwarded to a sequel to The Last of Us, but there's one more thing Naughty Dog need to do first
Naughty Dog's creative director Neil Druckmann has openly talked about planning a sequel to the critically acclaimed PS3 game The Last of Us a number of times before.
But most of his comments were fleeting responses in interviews when his focus was more than likely set on the next chapter of Nathan Drake's globetrotting adventure.
However as we edge closer to the release of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Druckmann has opened up about the future of the survival horror series.
Speaking to GamesRadar, Druckmann gave fans of the game a more comprehensive timescale for when they should expect to see a sequel.
Before my partner, Bruce [Straley] and I, my directing partner, came on to Uncharted 4 we were working on prototypes for different ideas within The Last Of Us universe," says Druckmann.
He also teased that "without going into specific genres [there were] ideas outside the The Last Of Us."
However, according to Druckmann, "all those things were left on hold when we had to come onto Uncharted 4 to direct the project."
"Our next focus is the single player [Uncharted 4] DLC and then, once we have enough resources, resurrect all those prototypes; see where we're at, see where the teams at, what they’re excited for and go from there."
All of this follows the most recent round of previews for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and a 16 minute gameplay trailer for the games Madagascar setting.
In the clip (which you can watch below) we get a much better look at the game since the demo we saw at E3 last year.
Having already seen the epic set-pieces and action-spectacular in that last demo, this latest insight into the game shows off some of the newer features, in particular, the more stealthy elements which have crept into the finished game.
Which incidentaly, many gamers is a direct result of the awesome stealth work in The Last of Us.
The game finally went gold earlier this month, which for anyone unfamiliar with the term means that the game is 100% finished and the master disc (gold) has been sent to the factory for replication and distribution.
This also means that after several delays and set backs, Sony and Naughty Dog's plan to release Uncharted 4 on May 10 is all set in stone.
So you can all bank on playing the game in just over a months time.
Unfortunately with the game looming ever closer, we won't be able to put off those suspicions of Drakes demise for that much longer.
Based off comments by Neil Druckmann earlier this year in an interview with The Sun, many believe that Drake might not survive the upcoming fourth and final release in the series.
Druckmann said: “The heart of this is Nathan Drake’s struggle: how do you balance your relationship with your family and friends and your passion, the thing you’re willing to dedicate your life to and make big sacrifices for.
"That’s what we want to get into. Because maybe you can’t have both. Maybe you can’t have your family and that passion and the obsession." Continued Druckmann.
"We've been with this character for so long. He's at the height of his popularity, so it's not a good business decision [walking away from the series]. But I feel like the best way to honour him is to go out on top, to finish his story.
"But with the end of story, it will be really hard to do a sequel with Nathan Drake. Maybe there'll be a prequel, maybe it will be a different character, I don't know. But this is the end for Nathan Drake."
