brings thousands of movies and games to your TV
NVIDIA'S Shield TV streams top games, Netflix and iPlayer to your telly and costs over £100 less than a PS4.
There’s never been a better time to watch TV.
Telly addicts now have a huge choice with Sky, Apple, Amazon, EE and Google all launching new ways to consume the latest content.
And now there’s another TV box to add to the ever growing list, but this one lands in your lounge with a very nifty trick up its sleeve.
The Nvidia SHIELD TV not only brings you a ton of the latest films and shows, but also doubles as a powerful games console.
Straight out of the box this sleek gadget looks like a baby Xbox and even features a neon green light that glows when power begins running through its veins.
It also arrives with a console-style wireless controller, which allows you to navigate menus and play games like a pro.
If you'd rather have a standard remote as well, this can be added to the package for an extra 39.99.
Setting up the Nvidia SHIELD TV is a doddle and, as long as you have a decent Wi-Fi connection, you’ll be up and running in minutes.
The Shield is powered by Google’s Android TV operating system which includes hundreds of apps such as Netflix and YouTube and BBC iPlayer.
But the SHIELD TV’s biggest bonus feature is GeForce NOW.
For a monthly subscription of £7.49 GeForce NOW brings instant access to over 50 top games which are all streamed directly to the box.
GeForce NOW titles include Tomb Raider games, rally epic Dirt 3, Batman: Arkham Knight and Sniper Elite, plus there’s plenty of action for kids with a number of Sonic and Lego classics featuring in the subscription.
If these titles aren’t enough you can also purchase extra AAA games via the Shield Games store and you can even stream titles from your PC to your TV via the mini console.
There’s no doubting that the Nvidia SHIELD TV is a great little device but sadly it’s not without its faults.
Although we like the concept of streaming games for a monthly fee, we can’t help thinking £7.49 is a little steep considering the GeForce NOW titles aren’t that new.
Then there’s the issue of Wi-Fi.
We tested the SHIELD TV in a number of different locations with varying degrees of success.
And, if your Wi-Fi isn’t blisteringly fast, you’ll be faced with stuttering gameplay which soon becomes infuriating.
Finally there's the price, as to the most out of the Sheild you will need to spend big.
The 16GB version comes in at a very reasonable £149 but if you want the 500GB model you'll need £219 in the bank.
These niggles mean the SHIELD TV isn’t perfect and it's certainly NOT going to worry PlayStation or Xbox.
But there’s plenty of positives to make this steaming box well worth a look.
And if you want a portable games console that can also turn your TV smart, this might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.
