NEW virus has been found that allows attackers to gain full access to Apple's MacBook without the user knowing
Apple Mac users are being warned after a deadly new virus has been discovered.
The nasty malware is able to infect the Mac operating system and give hackers full access to the computer's files, controls and even its webcam.
The virus, dubbed Backdoor.MAC.Elanor, was discovered by the team at Bitdefender who say it's being downloaded from reputable sites offering Mac software.
Cyber thieves have managed to hide the threat in a fake file converter application called Easy Doc Converter.app.
The app was described as a “fast and simple file converter for OS X,” but running the app actually installs the Eleanor malware on user's machines.
Speaking about the bug Tiberius Axinte, Technical Leader, Bitdefender Antimalware Lab, said: “This type of malware is particularly dangerous as it’s hard to detect and offers the attacker full control of the compromised system,
“For instance, someone can lock you out of your laptop, threaten to blackmail you to restore your private files or transform your laptop into a botnet to attack other devices. The possibilities are endless.”
Apple's Mac operating system is one of the most secure in the world and is hard for hackers to crack.
Luckily, this new threat is also pretty tricky to install as it has not been digitally signed by an Apple-approved certificate.
This means that as long as Apple's Gatekeeper security package is enabled user's shouldn't get infected.
Here's how to make sure you don't hit by the malware.
1. On your Mac head to System Preferences
2. Next tap Security & Privacy
3. From the General tab look at the option that says "Allow apps downloaded from"
4. Make sure you tick the box that says "Mac App Store and identified developers.
You should then be safe.
