The Movie (15) is flabby but fun
“HAVEN’T we got any, you know, hand money?” snorts Patsy (Joanna Lumley) while reaching for an imaginary bank note.
The fashion mag editor and her PR guru pal Edina (Jennifer Saunders) are in dire straights. Their credit cards are maxed out, the Bolly’s gone and Patsy is quaffing Chanel No 5.
At this point, this sitcom spin-off isn’t in great shape either.
The plot is beginning to look supermodel thin and a parade of painful celebrity cameos has lent it the air of an overlong charity telethon sketch. But whenever you fear the whole enterprise is about to come crashing down, the brilliant Lumley hoiks it back on its feet.
There’s a hilarious moment where she incorporates a syringe-full of botox into her daily ablutions and a great scene where we see her listening intently to a Gallic vicar jabbering on in his native tongue.
“French,” she reveals expertly to a bewildered Edina. The timing and the delivery are both perfect.
Yes, we’re in France. As in the movies of The Inbetweeners, Mr Bean and Are You Being Served? the TV favourites have gone on a trip abroad.
Eddy has become the most hated person in Britain after sending Kate Moss tumbling into the Thames at a celeb bash.
After witnessing the model’s attempt to play herself, it could be considered a mercy killing but the police and the media have other ideas.
With the paparazzi camped outside her London home, Eddy and her best pal decide to lay low in Cannes.
There we get some cross-dressing hi-jinks, Dame Edna in a swimming hat and Judith Chalmers at a tea dance.
The cameos are lazily thought-out but there’s still plenty of life left in Saunders and Lumley’s double-act.
With the nation in crisis and the value of our “hand money” plummeting, this shambolic but likeable comedy could offer some much-needed relief.
