TODAY marks four decades since US forces pulled out of Saigon, to mark the occasion we've got a round-up of the most iconic movies inspired by the conflict
This epic war drama from 1978, follows three Russian-American steel workers serving in Vietnam. Boasting an all-star cast including Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken and Meryl Streep, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
Apocalypse Now
Released in 1979, the film stars Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen and Robert Duvall, and features one of the most famous movie scenes ever, set against the soundtrack of Ride Of The Valkarie, as the US helicopters attack a Vietnamese village. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made.
Platoon
The first Hollywood film written by a Vietnam veteran, Oliver Stone. Platoon was released in 1986 as the first part of a trilogy. Written to counter John Wayne's portrayal of the war in 1968’s The Green Berets, the movie, starring Tom Berenger, Willem Defoe and Charlie Sheen, won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
FMJ (Full Metal Jacket)
Stanley Kubrick's 1987 flick, followed a platoon of US marines through their training and experiences during the Tet Offensive. The film starred Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, Vincent D'Onofrio - who was asked to put on five stone for his role of Private Pyle
Hamburger Hill
Based on the actual assault on a fortified position near the Laotian border that resulted in heavy casualties on both sides – the film was directed by John Irvin and starred Dylan McDermott, Steven Weber, Courtney B. Vance, Don Cheadle and Michael Boatman.
Good Morning Vietnam
Treading the fine line between war drama and comedy, this 1987 picture which starred Robin Williams as a radio DJ on Armed Forces Radio Service, was set in Saigon in 1965. With a supporting role from Forest Whitaker it was a critical and commercial success
Born On The Fourth Of July
Starring Tom Cruise, Born On The Fourth of July is the second of Oliver Stone's "trilogy" of Vietnam films following Platoon. A huge success, the film was nominated for eight Academy Awards and grossed over $161 million at the box office.
