Orlando Bloom and Forest Whitaker become the latest detective duo in a long line of dysfunctional movie partnerships in their latest movie Zulu, so we thought we'd round up some of the greatest (and not so great) cop partnerships ever.
There's a lot to be said for having a partner who's willing to lay their life on the line for you, and every good cop needs one.
Unfortunately for movie cops their partners aren't always up to scratch. They can be a hard-drinking loudmouth, gun-crazy nutcase or even a dog.
It seems like movie cops get a raw deal.
Inspired by the DVD of Zulu, which sees the unlikely duo of Orlando Bloom and Forest Whitaker as a pair of no-nonsense South African cops, we count down some of the greatest and not so great cop partnerships in movie history.
As Seen In: Starsky & Hutch
The Partnership: Starsky (Ben Stiller) is uptight and takes his police work too seriously. Hutch (Owen Wilson) is so laid back he doesn¹t take anything seriously, least of all his police work.
First Impressions: Paired up as punishment for respective cock-ups on the job, the Bay City detectives don¹t exactly hit it off, bickering over the hard-hitting issues that keep most cops awake at night such as whether Starsky¹s hair is permed or natural.
Famous Cases: Busting a multi-million dollar cocaine deal, though not before Starsky accidentally does a load and gets himself involved in an ill-advised disco dance-off.
Sokhela and Epkeen
As Seen In: Zulu
The Partnership: Sokhela (Forest Whitaker) is a well-meaning cop who works hard to get the job done. Epkeen (Orlando Bloom) is a boozed-up rogue who's on the sauce before he¹s got his gun-belt on.
First Impressions: By now the pair are experienced partners, but that doesn¹t mean Epkeen's drinking doesn't rub Sokhela the wrong way.
Famous Cases: Their latest case sees them on the case of a killer, linked to a dangerous new drug and the mysterious disappearance of local children. Fun and games as ever.
Ashburn and Mullins
As Seen In: The Heat
The Partnership: Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is a hotshot FBI special agent who does things by-the-book. Mullins (Melissa McCarthy) is a potty-mouthed, rebel cop who doesn't even know there is a book. And if she did, she'd hit someone with it.
First Impressions: Coming to Boston to investigate a drug kingpin, Ashburn isn¹t impressed by having to team up with Mullins. Nothing a drunken night out together can't solve.
Famous Cases: The duo take down notorious drug lord 'Larkin' (Taran Killam) with a swift bullet to his, ahem, stash.
Carter and Lee
As Seen In: Rush Hour
The Partnership: Carter (Chris Tucker) is a motor mouth Los Angeles cop. Lee (Jackie Chan) is a Hong Kong detective who¹s pretty nifty with his hands. And his feet for that matter.
First Impressions: Carter is unimpressed when he's assigned to Lee. Mostly because he assumes Lee can¹t speak English, or 'American' as he seems to think it's called.
Famous Cases: Lee comes to LA to investigate the kidnapping of a Chinese diplomat¹s daughter. Their combined talents Lee's martial arts skills and Carter's ability to seemingly never shut up save the day.
Slater and Michaels
As Seen In: Superbad
The Partnership: Slater (Bill Hader) is a trigger-happy, beer-swilling, irresponsible moron. Michaels (Seth Rogen) is well, pretty much the same.
First Impressions: When we first meet them they¹re already a well-established duo. It¹s safe to assume they probably hit it off immediately, sharing a joke over some little drunken target practice.
Famous Cases: When underage drinker 'McLovin' (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) is assaulted during an off license stick-up, Slater and Michaels arrive on the scene. However, rather than catch the robber they spend all night cruising and boozing with their new best pal.
Nicholas Angel and Danny Butterman
As Seen In: Hot Fuzz
The Partnership: Angel (Simon Pegg) is an overachieving super police constable. Danny (Nick Frost) is a roly-poly knucklehead obsessed with action movies.
First Impressions: After Angel transfers from London to the West Country village of Sanford, he arrests Danny for drink driving, not realizing that Danny¹s his new partner. Or that in Sanford it's only a crime punishable by having to buy everyone ice cream.
Famous Cases: They soon uncover a murderous conspiracy to ensure Sanford wins the coveted ³Village of the Year² award cue a high-octane, gun-toting, West Country-style showdown
Riggs and Murtaugh
As Seen In: Lethal Weapon
The Partnership: Murtaugh (Danny Glover) is a family man who's 'too old for this sh*t'. Riggs (Mel Gibson) is a borderline psychotic with mullet to die for.
First Impressions: Murtaugh mistakes Riggs for a gunman and tries (and fails) to wrestle him to the floor. If that sounds bad, Riggs soon ups the ante by trying to commit suicide in front of Murtaugh. It gets funnier, honest.
Famous Cases: Putting their numerous differences aside, they bring down a Los Angeles drugs ring together. Plus, they become best friends as you can probably tell from the endless sequels
Turner and Hooch
As Seen In: Turner & Hooch
The Partnership: Turner (Tom Hanks) is a straight-laced, super-organised, by-the-book investigator. Hooch is a giant slobbering dog with a talent for destroying houses.
First Impressions: Hooch's instinct is to clamp his jaws around Turner's throat. He must have seen Sleepless In Seattle.
Famous Cases: After a thug kills Hooch's owner, Turner takes the dog home. They uncover a smuggling operation that involves a crooked police captain. Tragically, Hooch is shot in the line of duty. Even more tragically, Turner isn't.
